Understanding Social Media Categories

There are close to 200 major social media platforms across the world, not to mention the hundreds and hundreds of minor platforms that exist. Choosing the one that is right for you and your business is important to ensure you are connecting with the right audience, in the best way possible.

The social media landscape can be best broken down into nine major categories, each serving a different purpose. The categories are:

  • Social Networks
  • Microblogs
  • Content Sharing
  • Discussion
  • Livecasting
  • Virtual Worlds
  • Social Games
  • Massively-Multiplayer Online
  • Publishing

Whilst the Social Networks category may appear to be the best ‘one size fits all’ approach, this really only covers a small part of the sector with the likes of Facebook and Linkedin dominating the space. Some businesses may be better served through Content Sharing platforms such as Instagram and SnapChat, whilst for others Microblogs such as Twitter may be the answer.

In this next article, we explore each one of these to help you better understand the categories, their role in the social media landscape, and to help identify which one best suits your needs.
